The hospitality industry spans several different segments - accommodation/lodging, food, travel, tourism and recreation.  To search effectively for legal cases, you'll need to narrow your focus a bit.

Take some time to browse the types of businesses associated with each segment of the industry. A hospitality textbook is an excellent place to start.  For example, skim the pages of this section of Hospitality ExperienceThe nature and scope of the hospitality industry (pp. 71-92).

You might also explore the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS):

As you browse, take note of business types that interest you.  When you're ready to start searching, you'll use them as keywords. For example, you might search for:

  • hotel AND court case
  • casino AND lawsuit
  • restaurant AND legal case

Where should you search?

  • You might like to start with the library's Everything search tool, or even Google - you'll find articles from newspapers, videos and even scholarly articles that describe and discuss cases related to your keywords.  You can use those articles to choose a specific case to explore further.

  • Google Scholar also offers a case law option, which will allow you to search for federal and state cases related to various business types. See this tutorial for a quick demo: Finding Case Law Using Google Scholar

Once you've identified the case you want to read more closely, you can move on to Nexis Uni: How do I find legal cases using Nexis Uni?
