Answer

Our library has a discovery search tool, Summon, that lets you search many of our subscription article databases and ebook collections from a single search box!   You can still find the individual databases on your course guide (when you have a very complex and/or narrow research topic, they're what you'll need to drill down deep).   But, Summon is a great place to start any research project!

If these tips don't help you find what you need,  contact the librarians.

Find articles

1.  Visit the Summon basic search at http://apus.summon.serialssolutions.com/#!/
2.  Type keywords like these into the search box:

  • learning environment
  • classroom environment
  • study environment
If you're interested in a particular aspect of learning environments, add those concepts to your search.  For example:
  • classroom environment and lighting
  • classroom environment and noise
  • learning environment and distraction
  • learning environment and social interaction

3.  Click "Search."
4.  On the left side of the results page, you'll see a list of filters

  • Click "Full Text Online."
  • Choose an article type.  If you need scholarly articles, click "Journal Articles" and "Scholarly & Peer-Review."

5.  When you see an article that looks like a good fit, click the "Full Text Online" link to visit the full text and start reading!

Don't type long phrases into the search box!  Type just the main ideas from your topic, and combine them with AND (read more about effective keywords here).

While Summon lets you search for both ebooks and articles in one place, it's wise to approach a book search differently

Why?  Remember that books are much longer than articles, and so are also usually broader in scope.  If you see a book that looks similar to your topic, even if it's not a perfect match -- look inside it for chapters or sections that deal with your topic!

1.  Visit the Summon basic search at http://apus.summon.serialssolutions.com/#!/
2.  Try searching for keywords like these:

  • classroom environment
  • learning environment
  • classroom management
3.  Click "Search."
4.  On the left side of the results page, you'll see a list of filters
  • Click "Books & eBooks"
5.  When you see a book that looks like a good fit, click the "Full Text Online" link to visit the full text of and start reading!

Find websites

Searching for open (free) websites is tricky, since anyone can publish anything on the internet.   Not all of those sites will be worthy of a college-level research assignment (or even your personal use outside of class!).

Be sure you're finding the best possible information by following these tips:

  • Try searching iSEEK Education!  It's a search engine that focuses on education topics.
